April Prentice, Project Manager, FDM (9-year career break)
Following an MSc in Computation from Manchester University, I spent ten years as an IT Consultant, bridging the gap between development teams and clients by configuring, specifying, and testing software for telecoms billing and customer care systems.
After the birth of my second child, I took voluntary redundancy, marking the beginning of a nine-year career break. During this time, I taught piano and helped run an early year’s centre, developing resilience and adaptability that later proved invaluable in my professional life.
When I decided to return to work, I was drawn to the opportunity to gain project management training and professional qualifications, which complemented my prior experience and helped update my skills. Although the interview process was nerve-wracking, I was pleasantly surprised that my previous expertise remained highly transferable. Once in my new role, I quickly adapted by creating a glossary of terms to navigate the industry’s evolving jargon, a strategy I recommend to anyone stepping into a new environment.
My return to work was facilitated by FDM’s Returner Programme, where I completed the Change and Transformation Practice. After training in August 2018, I began my first assignment in October, working in financial services a shift from my background in telecoms. This new role exposed me to the worlds of risk, regulation, and compliance, where I worked with senior stakeholders and made a significant impact on regulatory milestones.
Balancing childcare logistics with office work was a challenge, but I overcame it by becoming a more efficient multitasker and delegator. The support from FDM’s leads was instrumental in rebuilding my confidence and recognising the relevance of my skills in a modern work environment.
Looking back, I’ve embraced the value of my existing knowledge, even in a rapidly evolving industry. My advice to other returners is to trust in your skills, stay adaptable, and take advantage of learning resources to bridge any gaps. With determination and the right support, you can return as a confident and capable professional.
