This programme will be delivered within the Underwriting, Governance, Customer & Operations and the Technology and Data pillars and is targeted at experienced professionals looking to return to work after an extended career break of 18 months or more as at May 2024. You may have been working on a small-scale basis to fit around your other commitments or have not done any paid work for a number of years.

About the Programme

  • The programme offers a professionally paid placement of 6 months, from May to November 2024
  • There will be a strong likelihood of a permanent role at the end of the programme
  • To support your transition back into the workplace, you will receive an internal mentor and a buddy for your day-to-day questions
  • You will benefit from Career Returners’ Coaching Programme throughout your time on the programme

Technology & Data

When it comes to data, First Central know their stuff and the Technology & Data team’s where the masters work their magic. There’s a good reason First Central calls itself a technology group as well as an insurance company. They’re data geeks and proud of it; they’ve even developed their own platforms. The Technology & Data wizards do way more than fixing computers when they crash. They design and devise data solutions. They report, visualise and educate. They’re consultants for the business and they keep data security up to scratch. Change management? That’s them too; they’re experts at driving efficiencies across the change delivery life cycle. Oh, and guess who they call when their computers crash…..could you be a data whizz?

The teams may be scarily innovative and knowledgeable, but they are humans at heart. If you’re technologically minded with a thirst for information and solutions, you speak their language.

This team is seeking skills relating to strong communication and interpersonal skills, strong service focus, passion for delivering high-quality products, planning, time management and organisational skills, influential and negotiating, analytical and problem-solving skills together with experience of analytical platforms such as PowerBI, Tableau, Qliksence, Agile delivery skills and software management tools such as Jira, Confluence, Azure Dev Ops.


Did someone mention data? First Central’s Underwriting teams use state-of-the-art data sources to measure risk thoroughly. They leave nothing to chance; their eagle eyes scrutinise trends and behaviours, analyse scenarios and come up with answers. They make sure they’re giving customers a fair price and the terms of their insurance cover is good for all.

The Underwriting colleagues live and breathe data and numbers. They’re sponges, absorbing technical information and figuring it out quickly. They’re analytical and know how to add value for customers and the business.

This area is looking for skills relating to Underwriting or product management in personal lines insurance, if its in home – it’s a match! Communication and stakeholder management, technical underwriting, mathematics, problem solving, interpreting technical documents, time management and organisational skills.

Customer & Operations

The teams in Customer and Operations look after people. They make things as quick, easy and straightforward as they can be. Whether it’s helping with a new policy or a renewal or supporting customers with their damage, injury or third-party claims, Customer & Operation is there. And, to keep their premiums as fair as possible for everyone, they’re expert at uncovering and dealing with fraudulent claims. No one should have to pay for someone else’s dishonesty.

Who works in Customer & Operations? Their teams know customers may well feel tense and annoyed when they phone. That’s understandable. Their colleagues are calm, considerate and patient. They’re ace investigators and reasonable negotiators. They are customer service experts!

The team is looking for skills in the customer service experience best practice, journey mapping, customer focused, proactive, driven, deliver change, presentation, pitching ideas, problem solving, analytical, storytelling and engagement with audiences, time management, organisational skills and not afraid to challenge the existing status quo!


As an insurance company, First Central are regulated by two organisations in what’s known as a ‘twin peaks’ system: the Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA), part of the Bank of England, and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). These make sure First Central behave safely and fairly for customers while allowing them to offer products at a good price, to innovate, and to grow the UK economy.

It’s the Governance team’s job to make sure they meet all their compliance responsibilities. It’s vital. And they’re continually on the lookout for changes in legislation or policy that will affect their business – checking they manage risk as they should and sticking to the standards, in other words, they keep things on the straight and narrow so everything runs smoothly.

Is Governance for you? If you’re organised and methodical, absolutely. Best practice will be second nature to you, skills in building and maintaining relationships, strong attention to detail, excellent communication with great influencing and negotiating skills, ability to translate issues and find resolutions and report writing to a high standard are a must.
