Legal Associate

The role

As they rev up their legal function, they’ve uncovered the need for extra firepower to kick off an awesome roadmap of legal and compliance activities this year (and beyond) and they want you to be part of the journey. Join them in crafting policies, processes, and training that will play a vital part in turbocharging their business. Roll up your sleeves and get stuck in owning and executing exciting legal projects.

Your main mission? To supercharge the legal function by lightening the load on their Legal Counsel and demystifying day-to-day legal quandaries for their favourite customers – the business.

As a member of a very small legal team, it goes without saying that you will be a key player in their quest for excellence.

What you’ll be working on

The life of an in-house lawyer is varied and each day is a veritable roulette of tasks; one day you might be negotiating terms with a client and the next you could be reviewing a new AI tool for legal issues. To give you a bit more of an understanding of the kinds of tasks that may come your way, here is a non-exhaustive selection:

  • Undertaking legal reviews for all new supplier contracts and being the ultimate gatekeeper of their contracts approval policy. Maintaining their existing supplier contract database in their contract management system to ensure they don’t miss a renewal!
  • Helping their sales team with tricky client queries on our terms and conditions.
  • Conducting reviews of AI tools to make sure they are compliant with our AI Tool policy.
  • Horizon scanning for any upcoming legislative changes and providing updates to the business in a fun but informative way.
  • Responding to various queries in their #ask-legal slack channel and providing relevant advice.

There will also be a number of projects to sink your teeth into which, if they pull off, will deliver significant efficiencies and hopefully be the start of their legal and compliance nirvana. Here’s a sneak peek of the subject matter of those projects;

  • Implementing a data protection framework including all of the classic data protection bells and whistles – transfer risk assessments, data protection agreements and data processing activity records.
  • Kicking off their phase 2 review of legacy supplier contracts to sniff out any contractual risks and scope out how to address them.
  • Creating an induction plan for new starters to give them a fun and fact filled introduction to legal.
  • Revamping their internal playbook for their sales teams, facilitating contract training sessions and improving the client due diligence process.
  • Helping their clients get to know how they do legal/compliance by creating an information hub so that they can self-serve.
  • Supporting the implementation of vendor management systems and other legal software tools.

As a company they try to minimise meetings (they have meeting-free Wednesdays) and default to asynchronous written communication over long multiple person meetings.

What you’ll bring to the team

They believe expertise goes beyond a mere shopping list compilation of skills. Their priority is to find the right fit for their business who relates with their values – someone who not only possesses the technical competencies required for the role but more importantly, brings a proactive and dedicated approach to what they do and embodies a positive work ethic.

Having said that this is a legal professional role and as such there will be some must haves which we would like to highlight:

  • Qualified lawyer (in England and Wales) with 3+ years PQE.
  • Strong contract drafting, negotiation, and review skills.
  • Knowledge of data protection regulations and familiarity with international privacy laws.
  • Research skills – ability to interpret complex topics into a digestible format.

For extra brownie points they will also look to see how you might display some of these qualities which have proven to be invaluable for an in-house legal resource:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in using legal database software and general IT.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to understand business needs.
  • Tech background and interest.

Salary: £60,000

A couple of important details

They require permission to work in the UK without sponsorship. They encourage applications from candidates who are looking for flexibility in a role – whether that be part time hours or a fixed term contract for example. They ask that you detail what your preference is in your application.

They work hybrid and ask that new FundAppers work at their shiny London office 3 days per week during their probation period so as to make the most of getting to know the business and other FundAppers.
